Many of them offer admission-free days throughout the year, meaning you can save big on priceless experiences. Here are some of the free museum days in San Francisco that you should put on your calendar.

Asian Art Museum (200 Larkin St.) - Free Admission, First Sunday of the Month

San Francisco's Asian Art Museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian art in the world. Visit on the first Sunday of any month to explore the collection for free. To get to the Asian Art Museum, take BART or Muni to Civic Center Station.

California Academy of Sciences (55 Music Concourse Dr.) - Free Admission, Sept. 23-25, 2018

The California Academy of Sciences is a science museum, planetarium, aquarium, rainforest, and more—all under one (living) roof. There are free days for the public scheduled throughout the year. This year, out-of-town visitors can see penguins, travel the stars, and wander among the butterflies for free, Sept. 23-25. San Francisco residents can take advantage of a series of free community days determined by zip code. More information can be found on the Academy's website. Contemporary Jewish Museum (736 Mission St.) - Free Admission, First Tuesday of the Month

Check out the Contemporary Jewish Museum, which showcases art, music, film, and more that speaks to the Jewish experience and identity. Visit on the first Tuesday of any month to enter for free. To get to the Contemporary Jewish Museum, take BART or Muni to either the Powell St. or Montgomery St. stations.

de Young Museum (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr.) - Free Admission, First Tuesday of the Month

The de Young incorporates art, architecture, and landscaping to create a memorable experience in Golden Gate Park. Visit the de Young Museum on the first Tuesday of any month for free admission. You can reach the museum by taking the 5 or 5R Muni bus to 8th Ave. The museum is just a short walk in the park from Fulton St. and 8th Ave.

The Exploratorium (Pier 15) - Free Admission, Various Days; Visit Website for Details

The Exploratorium is a beloved institution in San Francisco dedicated to science and discovery. Free days at the Exploratorium are scheduled to coincide with certain holidays and seasons. Visit their website for more info. To get to the Exploratorium, take BART or Muni to the Embarcadero station and walk north along the waterfront. For a more direct drop-off, take the F line streetcar to the Embarcadero and Green St. stop.

GLBT Museum (4127 18th St.) - Free Admission, First Wednesday of the Month

To learn about the history of the LGBTQ community in San Francisco for free, plan a visit to the GLBT Museum on the first Wednesday of the month. This museum celebrates gay history with a range of multimedia exhibits, art, and more. Get to the GLBT Museum by taking the K, L, M, or T Muni lines to Castro St.

Legion of Honor (100 34th Ave.) - Free Admission, First Tuesday of the Month

The Legion of Honor is a breathtaking collection of art in an equally stunning location. Nestled within Lincoln Park, the grounds of the museum offer visitors gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, and Pacific Ocean. Entry is free here on the first Tuesday of every month. You can get to the Legion of Honor by taking the 1 Muni bus to 32 Ave. and Clement St. The museum is a short walk in the park from the stop.

Museum of Craft and Design (2569 Third St.) - Free Admission, First Tuesday of the Month

The Museum of Craft and Design is an institution dedicated to the celebration of craft. Visit the museum on the first Tuesday of the month to take advantage of free admission. You can get to the museum by taking the T Muni Metro to 23rd St.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) (151 Third St.) - Free Admission, Sept. 30, 2018
