SailGP brings cutting-edge racing back to San Francisco in 2020

SailGP Returns to the San Francisco Bay in 2020

2020 marks the second season of the new, fan-centric grand prix racing championship, SailGP, in San Francisco. The City will again play host to the second stop of SailGP's global season, on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3. This exciting event offers U.S. audiences a redefined form of sailing, which includes a redesigned and supercharged boat class, the F50.

Event Information

Teams representing seven nations—the United States, Australia, France, Great Britain, Japan, Spain and Denmark — will race on identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, known as the F50. The world's fastest, most technologically advanced flying catamaran, the F50 broke the 50-knot (60mph/100kph) speed barrier in Season 1's racing.

SailGP teams practice in the San Francisco Bay in 2019

The competing teams will race just off the Marina Yacht Club Peninsula, located in the heart of San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge serving as a stunning and dramatic backdrop. The San Francisco SailGP Race Village, located on the Marina Yacht Club Peninsula and which attracted 22,000 spectators in the first year, will again serve as the center of the festivities.

After an official practice day on Friday, May 1 with all six teams, the national teams will compete in a total of five short-format fleet races across May 2 and 3. The top two teams will face off in a match-race finale to determine the winner on Sunday afternoon.

The United States SailGP team is comprised of some of the best and brightest athletes: Rome Kirby of Newport, RI (helmsman); Riley Gibbs of Long Beach, CA (wing trimmer); Hans Henken of Coronado, CA (flight controller); Mac Agnese of Fort Lauderdale, FL (Grinder);Dan Morris of Newport, RI (grinder), and Taylor Canfield of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (flight controller-tactician). San Francisco SailGP is the second stop in a series of five events taking place throughout the year and around the world in 2020. Spearheaded by Olympian Sir Russell Coutts and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, SailGP is sanctioned by World Sailing. The first SailGP 2020 event will kick off in Sydney (February 27-28), followed by San Francisco (May 2-3), New York (June 12-13) and Cowes (August TBD). The final stop will be Marseille (September TBD), where a winner-takes-all, $1 million match-race final will occur on the last day between the season’s top-two teams.
