On View: Make Believe at the Walt Disney Family Museum
The Walt Disney Family Museum's latest original exhibition, Make Believe: The World of Glen Keane, showcases the Disney animator and Oscar Award-winning artist's career and work from The Fox and the Hound (1981) to Tangled (2010). Keane was the artist behind many of your favorite characters, including Tarzan, Ariel, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, and the Beast. Make Believe is on view from March 8 to Sept. 3, 2018.
About the Exhibition
Keane curated this exhibition himself, in partnership with the museum's Director of Collections and Exhibitions. Featuring sketches, hand-drawn animation, and maquettes from throughout his career, Make Believe offers an intimate look at many of Keane's iconic characters, from beloved films such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), Pocahontas (1995), and Tarzan (1999).
Personal work of Keane's is also on display in the exhibition, offering guests a unique look at his evolving innovation and use of emerging technology. A collaboration with the Paris Opera on Nephtali is included, as well as a look at his 2017 work with NBA star Kobe Bryant and composer John Williams on the 2018 Academy Award-winning short Dear Basketball.
Keane also worked with Google Spotlight Stories to create a mobile 360 short film using hand-drawn animation, which evolved into a collaboration on Virtual Reality drawing tool Tilt Brush. This exciting technology will be on display within this exhibit, with a 3D-printed rendering of Keane's Victory Dance, created with Tilt Brush, as well as his early partnership work from 2014, Duet.
Make sure to keep an eye on the museum's calendar of events, as Tilt Brush artworks will be showcased throughout the year, including with the upcoming Walt Disney's Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation, coming in May 2018.
