Based on trillions of searches, Google has revealed their 16th annual Year in Search, providing a peek into the people, moments and brands that captured our attention in 2016. In the Travel category, “What to do in San Francisco” was the third most sought topic, exceeded only by “Where is Bali” and “What to do in Vegas.” 

San Francisco Travel Association Releases New Fall/Winter Digital Guide 

San Francisco Travel has released their first seasonal digital guide. Offering a distinctive “insider tone,” the 28-page guide, produced by Miles Partnership, is filled with reasons to visit San Francisco this season. Readers will find timely tips about major events and festivals, distinctive dining, seasonal treats, local shopping and special places throughout the city.   The next edition will be posted in April 2017.

When Pigs Fly: San Francisco International Airport Welcomes LiLou to the Wag Brigade

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has welcomed LiLou, a Juliana-breed pig, to its beloved Wag Brigade team of pets certified by the San Francisco SPCA’s Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) program.  LiLou is the first known airport therapy pig in the United States, and promises to surprise and delight guests at SFO with her winning personality, charming costumes and painted nails.  LiLou loves performing for her audience, and also visits several other facilities in San Francisco including senior centers and hospitals.

“Since its launch in 2013, the SFO Wag Brigade has become a favorite amenity among travelers,” said Director-Guest Experience Christopher Birch.  “With the addition of LiLou, we can look forward to more moments of surprise and delight for guests at our airport.”

“We have more than 300 dog, cat and rabbit volunteer teams, but LiLou is the first pig in our program,” said Dr. Jennifer Henley, SF SPCA Animal Assisted Therapy manager.  “It’s wonderful to witness the surprise and delight that LiLou brings to people during therapy visits.”

Launched in December 2013, the SFO Wag Brigade brings trained animals to the airport terminals to make passenger travel more enjoyable.  The SF SPCA certifies all animals through their AAT program prior to walking airport terminals.  Carefully selected for their temperament and airport suitability, animals wear vests that read “Pet Me!” to encourage interaction with airport guests.

Illuminate SF Festival of Light Celebrates New Installations in Event’s Fourth Year

Experience San Francisco as a shining gallery of light during the fourth annual Illuminate SF Festival of Light through New Year’s Day 2017. Art and technology lovers alike may embrace the power of light and tour San Francisco’s public art installations by a diverse range of local and world renowned light artists. 

The event celebrates 32 dramatic, eco-friendly light art installations—five more than last year and three times the number of the inaugural celebration in 2013—accessible by public transit and free for all ages. Held during the longest nights of the year, Illuminate SF Festival of Light features the now permanent Bay Lights, four vibrant installations in the new SMOMA, free neighborhood light art tours, artist studio and neon walking tours, a stargazing party at the Presidio and more interactive experiences. 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in 2017

In 1967 nearly 100,000 young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, turning San Francisco, CA into the epicenter of a cultural phenomenon known as the Summer of Love. During this transformative time, music, fashion, art and new ideas flourished and there was a feeling that everything was possible.  

That feeling never left the city. The young hippies that gathered in the city 50 years ago, and the sons and daughters of those who wore flowers in their hair, went on to stand up for civil rights and the environment, dared to question authority and still flock to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, forever linking the city to the counterculture and the ideas it launched, nurtured and spread.  

For visitors to San Francisco in 2017, the 50th anniversary will be a celebration with major exhibitions at some of the region’s top museums, special events and concerts looking back at the Summer of 1967 and exploring what that period meant then and now.  The celebration will also include a range of service and volunteerism events inspired by the original Summer of Love. 

San Francisco Travel and the California Historical Society have joined forces on the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Celebrating this rare moment in history, the California Historical Society provides the detailed factual and cultural context for this seminal summer through its own exhibition and work with cultural partners such as the de Young Museum.  San Francisco Travel is the go-to resource for visitors planning a trip, including must-see events, itineraries and tours that follow the footsteps of some of the greatest musicians of all time. 

To help visitors plan their “trip,” the San Francisco Travel Association has launched a special website, www.summeroflove2017.com, which provides an ever-expanding guide to the whole groovy scene, including events and itinerary ideas.  The site also links to the California Historical Society. 

Frommer’s Names San Francisco One of 18 “Best Places to Go in 2017”

San Francisco and the Bay Area were named to Frommer’s list of the 18 “Best Places to Go in 2017.”  

According to the editors: “Today we see San Francisco as a picturesque seat of American wealth—a city barely affordable to those not caught up in digital industries. But 50 years ago, in 1967, the largely working-class area flooded with young people intent on challenging American civil rights, protecting the environment, and defying traditional definitions of authority. In 2017, the whole city harks back to the Summer of Love. Dive into nearly two dozen events and exhibitions ranging from the story of the Black Panthers at the Oakland Museum of California to blockbuster exhibits, performances, and other events at the famed de Young Museum, the library, City Hall, and on ballet and concert stages citywide. In June, the legendary Monterey Pop Festival, which cemented the stature of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, returns 50 years after its debut…San Francisco may not be the anything-goes paradise it once was, but the Flower Power that has come to define the city by the Bay is finally getting its due as a serious subject.”  

GayCities Names San Francisco “Best City of 2016”

San Francisco took the highest award, the “Best City of 2016,” in GayCities’ annual “Best of GayCities” program.  GayCities readers cast tens-of-thousands of votes for more than 60 of the world’s best destinations in twelve categories, ranging from “Best Gayborhood” to “Up-and-Coming" city.

Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards Names San Francisco One of the Top Big Cities in the U.S. 

Condé Nast Traveler has announced the results of its 29th annual Readers’ Choice Awards with San Francisco recognized as number three on the list of Top Large Cities in the U.S.   The Readers’ Choice Awards are announced in the November issue of Condé Nast Traveler, on newsstands nationwide on October 25, 2016. The full list is published exclusively online, at www.CNTraveler.com/rca. Over 300,000 dedicated readers – nearly twice as many as last year -- cast votes for 7,394 hotels, 606 cities, 500 cruise ships, and 236 islands, in an average survey time of 8.4 minutes. 

The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration begin a construction project Jan. 2, 2017 that will impact visitation to the Marin Headlands through early May. The agencies will close the “5-Minute Tunnel” to the Marin Headlands for four months in order to repair its concrete surface and improve tunnel lighting. During the closure, all traffic to the Marin Headlands will be routed along scenic Conzelman Road.  

For public safety and to maintain a safe flow of traffic, several Golden Gate Bridge overlooks will be closed to vehicles along Conzelman, including the parking lot at Battery Spencer. Conzelman Road will become inaccessible to commercial tour buses; they are encouraged to visit Fort Baker instead for unique views of the bridge from Marin County. 

The Marin Headlands will remain a premier destination during the construction – many overlooks and all other sites are open for business. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trips to avoid evening rush hour and weekends after 2PM when congestion is at its peak.

The historic Baker-Barry Tunnel will reopen in May with safer surfaces for motorists and cyclists. The repairs will mitigate the unexpected short-term closures that have plagued the tunnel in recent years.

Jan. 18-29, 2017 - SF Restaurant Week Returns   

SF Restaurant Week, presented by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, returns for its third year on Jan. 18-29, 2017. SF Restaurant Week celebrates San Francisco’s world class dining and is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy a special menu at a favorite spot or discover a new favorite restaurant. The list of participating restaurants is live at www.sfrestaurantweek.com and menus will all be posted there in the first week of January.

More than 100 great San Francisco restaurants across 27 neighborhoods and representing 29 different cuisines will offer two-or-more course lunch menus for $15 or $25 and/or three-or-more course dinner menus for $40 or $65.

Many of the participating restaurants are new to the program. Celebrity chef Tyler Florence’s Wayfare Tavern will be participating in SF Restaurant Week, offering special dinner menus that highlight the restaurant’s signature fried chicken (described by Food + Wine magazine as “ridiculously good”).  Other program newcomers include: ‘Aina, Alembic, Babu Ji, Bellota, Black Cat, Blowfish Sushi To Die For, Boxing Room, Burma Love, Cassava, Chouquet’s, Delarosa, Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack, Fogo de Chao, the Grill at The St. Regis, Matador, Old Bus Tavern, Pier 23, the Rambler, The Fine Mousse, The Perennial, Tratto and more. 

The program also welcomes back perennial program favorites like Isa, Roka Akor, 1300 on Fillmore, Aatxe, One Market, Namu Gaji, Locanda Osteria & Bar, Lolinda, Hog & Rocks, Sauce, and more.

Feb. 10-19, 2017 - San Francisco Beer Week Celebrates America's First Craft Brewing Region 

Craft beer - along with its runaway international hit, American IPA - was born of the Bay Area's spirit of innovation. More than 100 breweries now operate in one of the world's most creative regions. The Bay Area continues to be a hotbed of beer innovation, where trends and techniques are created, rediscovered and riffed on. Golden Gate Restaurant Association Announces Winners for the First-Ever Saucy Awards®

The Golden Gate Restaurant Association (GGRA) announced the final winners at its first awards gala, The Saucy Awards®, on Nov. 14, 2016. With 16 industry-driven award categories in addition to the GGRA’s own Lifetime Achievement Award and a People’s Choice Award for Restaurant of the Year, presented by San Francisco magazine, The Saucy Awards® recognized the San Francisco Bay Area restaurant and bar community for its excellence. 

Nominees of the industry-driven categories were selected by The Saucy Awards® steering committee, consisting of six industry veterans and luminaries, including Joyce Goldstein, Patricia Unterman, Joel Riddell, Virginia Miller, Leslie Sbracco, and Marcy Coburn. A winner in each category was then voted on by GGRA members, while the public chose the People’s Choice Award recipient. The 18th award category for Lifetime Achievement Award was chosen directly by the GGRA board members.

Chef Ryan Scott Opens Finn Town – A Unique “Tavern with a Twist” in the Castro

Noontime Concerts Celebrates 28th Anniversary

Noontime Concerts, San Francisco’s legendary musical lunch break, celebrated its 28th Anniversary on Dec. 6, 2016.   Noontime Concerts has remained a treasured Bay Area landmark, presenting hundreds of classical concerts performed by outstanding local and international musicians each Tuesday afternoon in the heart of San Francisco. Founded at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral, 660 California St., the series is recognized as a valued local institution that continues to fulfill its mission to enrich the community and cultural life of the Bay Area.  An independent nonprofit arts organization, Noontime Concerts presents high quality classical performances year-round that are affordable and accessible to all.   Attendees are invited to make a donation of $5-$10 at concert time.

Jan. 21-April 30, 2017 – “diane arbus: in the beginning” at SFMOMA

“diane arbus: in the beginning” considers the first seven years of the photographer’s career, from 1956 to 1962. A lifelong New Yorker, Arbus found the city and its citizens an endlessly rich subject for her art. Working in Times Square, the Lower East Side, and Coney Island, she made some of the most powerful portraits of the twentieth century, training her lens on the pedestrians and performers she encountered there. This exhibition highlights her early and enduring interest in the subject matter that would come to define her as an artist. It also reveals the artist’s evolution from a 35mm format to the now instantly recognizable and widely imitated look of the square format she adopted in 1962. Bringing together over 100 photographs from this formative period, many on display for the first time, “diane arbus: in the beginning” offers fresh insights into the distinctive vision of this iconic American photographer.  This exhibition was organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Jan. 25-Feb. 18, 2017 – Curran Theater Re-Opens with “Fun Home”   

San Francisco’s historic Curran will re-open in January of 2017 with the groundbreaking Tony Award-winning musical “Fun Home.”  Built in 1922, the Curran has housed some of the most important productions in history and has maintained a reputation over the course of its life as one of the greatest venues in North America. Now, nearly 100 years after it welcomed its first Bay Area audiences, the Curran has undergone a major restoration and renovation. Under the curation of eight-time Tony Award winner Carole Shorenstein Hays, the Curran will reopen as a 1,600 seat venue in early 2017 with a new mission, being a home for the most exciting stage works being conceived and created anywhere in the world.

Jan. 26–June 25, 2017 - Cary Leibowitz at the Contemporary Jewish Museum 

New York–based contemporary artist Cary Leibowitz (b. 1963) creates comically self-effacing text-based works with a decidedly gay and often Jewish perspective that address issues of identity, kitsch, modernist critique, and queer politics. Since the early 1990s, when he became widely known under the moniker “Candyass,” Leibowitz has been one of the art world’s most delicious practitioners of this demonstrative self-abasement.

In both his cheeky multiples and his irregular-format paint-on-wood “wood” works, Leibowitz mixes his obsession with popular culture, fine art, and Jewishness with elements of therapy and self-loathing, interrogation and self-interrogation, institutional critique, social commentary, and stand-up comedy routine. His brightly colored reductive paintings often reference seventies queer history, blending comedy and neurosis in such a way that questions about appearance and identity become a running gag.

 The exhibition will feature nearly 350 original artworks and multiples from 1987 to the present: paintings, fabric works, multiples, installations, documentation, photography, and ephemera related to curatorial endeavors and performance.

Jan. 28, 2017 – Dec. 31, 2017 – Rodin Centenary at the Legion of Honor  

Marking the centenary of Auguste Rodin’s death in 1917, the Legion of Honor will present a completely new installation of its extraordinary Rodin holdings in “Rodin Centenary.” Approximately 50 objects in bronze, marble, and plaster—all from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s permanent collection—will be presented in a new context. The exhibition will examine the artist’s celebrated life and influential work—from his early days courting controversy with sculptures that bore unexpected levels of naturalism—to his later renown and lasting influence. “Rodin Centenary” is part of a worldwide series of major Rodin projects and will provide Bay Area audiences a significant opportunity to examine and recontextualize the legacy of the artist known as “the father of modern sculpture.” The Legion of Honor holds one of the finest collections in the world of sculpture by Rodin cast during his lifetime.

Feb. 2-25, 2017 - World Premiere Musical Comedy “The Revolution Will Not Be Harmonized” Presented by PianoFight’s Resident Sketch Comedy Group, Chardonnay

200 years in the future, the land is ruled by the mighty “Spotif-Eye,” everyone is a freelancer with an inflexible work schedule and the end of humankind draws near. This dystopian musical comedy introduces us to three sisters, a hair-obsessed Lieutenant, a mysterious Elder who speaks in song lyrics and the one algorithmically perfect song that rules them all. Feb. 25-May 29, 2017 - “Monet: The Early Years” at the Legion of Honor

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco will present “Monet: The Early Years” on Feb. 25- May 29, 2017 at the Legion of Honor. This will be the first major US exhibition devoted to the initial phase of Claude Monet’s (French, 1840–1926) career. Through approximately sixty paintings, the exhibition demonstrates the radical invention that marked the artist’s development during the formative years of 1858 to 1872. In this period the young painter developed his unique visual language and technique, creating striking works that manifested his interest in painting textures and the interplay of light upon surfaces.  With a selection of works gathered from some of the most important international collections – the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and other public and private collections worldwide – “Monet: The Early Years” authoritatively demonstrates the artist’s early command of many genres, not only the landscapes for which he has become so renowned but also still lifes, portraits and genre scenes.

March 3-April 2, 2017 - New Conservatory Theatre Center Presents Premiere of “Leaving The Blues” About Singer-Songwriter Alberta Hunter  

New Conservatory Theatre Center continues its 35th Anniversary celebration in March, presenting the world premiere of Jewelle Gomez’s “Leaving the Blues,” an NCTC-commissioned play with music imagining the life of legendary Blues singer-songwriter Alberta Hunter (1895-1984). In the new play by the “Gilda Stories’” author, Hunter is backstage preparing for a professional comeback, knowing just how many doors to the past it may open. Spanning 60 years, “Leaving the Blues” imagines a journey through the public life Hunter led as an African-American musician, the private life she hid as a lesbian, and the ghosts that won’t let her forget.   “Leaving the Blues” was commissioned and developed as part of NCTC’s New Play Development Lab, and will be directed by Arturo Catricala.  This is the second play in a trilogy Gomez is writing. The first was “Waiting for Giovanni,” written in collaboration with Harry Waters Jr., and was a dream play exploring the inner life of author James Baldwin. It premiered at NCTC in the 2011-2012 Season, and was also developed in NCTC’s New Play Development Lab.  For the world premiere of “Leaving the Blues,” NCTC partners with the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD). NCTC and MoAD presented special events for their members, including writing workshops with Gomez and a cabaret featuring a selection from the play and discussion with Gomez.

April 1-March, 2017 - “Exclusion: The Presidio's Role in WWII Japanese American Incarceration” at the Presidio Officers’ Club 

This April, the Presidio Officers' Club opens a new exhibition - Exclusion: The Presidio's Role in WWII Japanese American Incarceration.  Learn about the decisions that lead to the internment of more than 110,000 Japanese Americans in the United States, and the Presidio's pivotal role in executing the military orders. The exhibition invites visitors to investigate these individual, civic and national choices and to consider alternatives to and consequences of each decision. In doing so, the exhibition encourages reflection and inspires action about present-day issues of immigration, racism, and mass incarceration.

Disney’s “The Lion King” once again leaps onto SHN’s Orpheum Theatre stage through Dec. 31, 2016.      

The North American touring productions of “The Lion King” have been seen by more than 17 million theatergoers and grossed more than $1.2 billion to date.  Since its Broadway premiere in 1997, 23 global productions have been seen by more than 85 million people.  Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, “The Lion King” is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years.

The Asian Art Museum presents “The Rama Epic: Hero, Heroine, Ally, Foe,” an exhibition of ancient and contemporary artwork depicting sacred stories that together are as old as the Bible, longer than the Odyssey, and a source of creative inspiration across southern Asia.

One of the world’s great adventure stories, the Rama epic teems with excitement as well as moral quandaries that continue to shape how we view our lives today. This expansive exhibition features works from 1,500 years ago to today, illuminating through art, live performance, and masterful storytelling the enduring values and timeless appeal of key characters: Rama, the legendary prince; Sita, his long-suffering love; Hanuman, their faithful monkey lieutenant; and Ravana, the 10-headed lord of the demons. 

Unprecedented in scale and scope, the tale is told through 135 sculptures and paintings, masks, puppets and examples of temple architecture originating from India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia and borrowed from museums across the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Through Jan. 15, 2017 – “Shortening: Making Irrational Rational,” New Art Exhibition by Nelson Saiers on Alcatraz

Alcatraz, best known for the historic federal penitentiary and occupation by the Indians of All Tribes, also has a long tradition of welcoming artists to provoke thought about freedom and incarceration.  Starting in mid-July, the National Park Service and Nelson Saiers-artist and math Ph.D.- opened an installation called “Shortening: Making Irrational Rational.”  The exhibit is installed in the New Industries Building, which will be open through Jan. 15, 2017, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.  Access to the exhibit is included in the ferry price and can be purchased at www.alcatrazcruises.com

“Shortening: Making Irrational Rational” incorporates properties of the number Pi, prison vernacular and NFL football jerseys to weigh in on the "irrationally" long prison sentences given for minor, nonviolent drug offenses and the need to shorten those sentences.  The installation will show the first 200 digits of Pi on 100 NFL football jerseys.

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) presents a major exhibition to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party’s founding on October 15, 1966, in Oakland. Presenting a contemporary view of the Black Panther Party’s legacy from multiple perspectives, “All Power to the People: Black Panthers at 50” shows how the Party continues to inspire culture, social activism, and community empowerment efforts locally, nationally, and internationally. Designed to create empathy and emotional resonance, the exhibition explores the Black Panther Party as a necessary, heroic, and human response to societal needs. Chinese Historical Society Museum Reopens with Landmark “Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion” Exhibition 

The Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA), the oldest museum dedicated to the Chinese American experience, re-opened on Nov. 5, 2016 after a summer of renovation with the most extensive and important exhibition in its 50-year history: “Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion.”

“This exhibit is the proof of our mission,” said CHSA Executive Director Sue Lee, noting that the exhibition features reproductions from the New-York Historical Society’s holdings, interactive media, evocative recreations, and CHSA’s own historic Chinatown paintings by Jake Lee. “The curatorial quality, the historical detail, and the hands-on interactive technology of this exhibit are unlike anything we have ever done. Its educational potential really raises the bar for us. It is an unprecedented exploration of the Chinese American experience and diaspora.”

Prior to its now permanent installation at CHSA, “Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion” had impressive runs at the Oregon Historical Society and at the New-York Historical Society, the latter of which facilitated the exhibition’s donation to CHSA. 

“Quite simply,” said Lee, “this exhibit is the most comprehensive museum expression about the experience of Chinese in America to date.”

Jan. 15-March 31, 2017 -  San Francisco Botanical Garden’s Magnificent Magnolia Bloom

The start of the New Year in San Francisco offers a chance to be tickled pink by one of the city’s most breathtaking natural marvels as nearly 100 magnolias at San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park burst into bloom. Velvety silver buds on the often bare branches of these elegant trees, many rare and historic, open into dazzling pink, magenta, and white flowers, filling the wintery Garden with dramatic splashes of color and sweetly fragrant scents. 

The annual floral spectacle, with trees reaching 80 feet, is at its peak this year from mid-January through March, and visitors to the Garden can take advantage of free Magnolia Walk maps, docent-led tours, special signage, a magnolia mobile app, and more to celebrate and learn more about these magnificent magnolias.

San Francisco Botanical Garden is home to the most significant magnolia collection for conservation purposes outside China, where the majority of species originated. Its current collection includes 44 species, 42 cultivars and 16 hybrids or varieties, including many important specimens from Asia.

Through June 30, 2017 – “Butterflies & Blooms” at the Conservatory of Flowers

Get eye to eye with a butterfly in the exhibit “Butterflies & Blooms” coming to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park this fall. The popular exhibit returns by overwhelming demand to San Francisco’s beloved Victorian greenhouse, transforming its Special Exhibit gallery into a beautiful and intimate cottage garden aflutter with hundreds of butterflies on the wing including magnificent monarchs, western swallowtails, painted ladies and more. Walk among a wide variety of brightly colored blossoms like zinnias and daisies while free-flying butterflies flit from flower to flower, drinking nectar and getting covered in pollen. These goodwill ambassadors of the insect world provide a fascinating demonstration of plant pollination in action. The Butterfly Bungalow at the entrance to the gallery also allows you to observe the pupae in their chrysalis stage. You never know, you may be lucky enough to catch the moment when one of these delicate beauties emerges.

Building upon the Centennial of the National Park Service this year, the NPS is extending the Every Kid in a Park program for a second year in 2017.

The Every Kid in a Park pass is valid through Aug. 31, 2017. After completing a fun educational activity on the website, the child can download and print a pass. 

Locally, the printed pass can be traded for a more durable annual Every Kid in a Park pass at the three national park sites with entrance fees: Muir Woods National Monument, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and Pinnacles National Park

The pass grants free entry for fourth graders and up to three accompanying adults to most federally managed lands and waters, including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s 1907 Steam Tug Hercules Awarded Steamship Historical Society of America’s “2016 Tugboat of the Year Award”

The Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) has presented San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s 1907 steam tug Hercules with the SSHSA’s 2016 Tugboat of the Year award.  

Each year the Steamship Historical Society of America, an organization dedicated to recording, preserving and disseminating the history of engine-powered vessels, recognizes significant ships across the United States. As part of this year’s honor, the SSHSA stated, “the Hercules stands as a testament to her past and the West Coast Maritime community as a whole, and she will continue do so for generations to come, due to the extraordinary efforts of her inspirational and talented crew, the United States Park Service and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.”

Hercules’ ongoing restoration is a true collaboration between Park volunteers, the United States Coast Guard, and National Park Service staff. Every blast on her steam whistle signals a community coming together to preserve an important piece of America’s cultural heritage. Returning Hercules’ steam engine to operation was an important component of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial celebration, and the Park will keep offering pier side steam demonstrations throughout 2017.

Presidio to Open New Visitor Center in February 2017

The new William Penn Mott, Jr. Visitor Center opens in February 2017, at the north end of the Main Parade Ground, a major milestone for the Presidio's Post to Park transformation and the exciting next phase of welcoming the public. The new center a distinctive partnership with the National Parks Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, will be the jumping off point to a day in the Presidio, orienting guests to its current activities and features. The historic building (1900) is refurbished to offer an information desk and interactive exhibits that will help tell the story of the Presidio through interactive touchscreen panels, a video wall, audio presentation, and an entire room dedicated to revealing the four areas of the park: Main Post, Golden Gate, Crissy Field and the Southern Wilds. Dates for the public opening will be announced in early January.

Inn at the Presidio and Palace Hotel Honored by Historic Hotels of America® and Historic Hotels Worldwide®.  

Two San Francisco hotels were honored in the 2016 Awards of Excellence from Historic Hotels of America® and Historic Hotels Worldwide®.  The Inn at the Presidio (built in 1903) was named Best Small Historic Inn/Hotel (Under 75 Guestrooms).  The Palace Hotel (built in 1875) was named Best Historic Hotel (Over 400 Guestrooms).

Airports Council International-North America Honors Airport for Museum Exhibition Brochures

Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA), which represents governing bodies that own and operate commercial airports across the United States and Canada, recently honored SFO with their 2016 Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Service Award for Print Communications.  The award-winning entry was a suite of brochures for SFO Museum exhibitions produced during the fiscal year 2015-2016.  These publications are produced by the curatorial and graphics team at SFO Museum for free distribution in galleries located throughout the terminals of San Francisco International Airport.
